Before Getting a Tattoo: Tips and Preparation

Getting a tattoo is an exciting experience, and proper preparation can help ensure that your session goes smoothly and results in a beautiful piece of art. Here are some tips to follow before your tattoo appointment:

1. Research and Choose Wisely

1.1 Choose Your Design Carefully

Spend time thinking about the design you want. Look for inspiration and consider how it will look on your body. Remember, tattoos are permanent, so choose something meaningful and timeless.

1.2 Select the Right Artist

Each tattoo artist has a unique style. Look at portfolios to find an artist whose work aligns with your vision. Our studio features talented artists with diverse styles, so you’re sure to find the perfect match.

2. Prepare Your Body

2.1 Stay Hydrated

Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your appointment. Well-hydrated skin is more easier to tattoo, which can improve the overall outcome.

2.2 Get a Good Night’s Sleep

Make sure you’re well-rested before your session. Being tired can make the process more uncomfortable and affect your pain tolerance.

2.3 Eat a Healthy Meal

Have a substantial meal before your appointment. This helps maintain your blood sugar levels and keeps you feeling steady during the tattooing process.

3. Avoid Certain Substances

3.1 Avoid Alcohol and Caffeine

Do not consume alcohol or caffeine 24 hours before your appointment. These substances can thin your blood, making the tattooing process more difficult and increases the risk of excessive bleeding.

3.2 Avoid Blood Thinners

If possible, avoid taking blood-thinning medications such as aspirin before your tattoo session. Consult with your doctor if you are on prescription blood thinners.

4. Wear Comfortable Clothing

4.1 Dress Appropriately

Wear loose, comfortable clothing that gives your artist easy access to the area being tattooed. Dark clothing is recommended in case of ink stains.

4.2 Consider Layers

If you’re getting a larger tattoo, the session might take several hours. Dress in layers so you can adjust for comfort as needed.

5. Plan for Aftercare

5.1 Arrange Transportation

If you’re getting a large or painful tattoo, consider arranging for someone to drive you home. You might feel fatigued or sore after the session.

5.2 Stock Up on Supplies

Purchase recommended aftercare products in advance. We offer aftercare kits at the studio containing everything you need to care for your new tattoo.

6. Stay Relaxed and Positive

6.1 Trust Your Artist

Once you’ve chosen your design and artist, trust their expertise. They will guide you through the process and ensure you get the best result.

6.2 Stay Calm

It’s normal to feel a bit nervous, especially if it’s your first tattoo. Try to relax and enjoy the experience. Bring headphones and listen to your favourite music or a podcast to help distract yourself.

By following these tips, you’ll be well-prepared for your tattoo session and help ensure a positive experience. If you have any questions or need further advice, feel free to contact us.

Aftercare Tips

Thank you for choosing NostalgInk Tattoo Studio for your new tattoo! Proper aftercare is essential to ensure your tattoo heals beautifully and remains vibrant. Please follow the aftercare instructions below to promote optimal healing.

Initial Care

1. Leave the Bandage On

Your artist will apply a bandage or wrap after completing your tattoo. Leave this bandage on for at least 2-4 hours to protect your new tattoo from bacteria and friction.

2. Wash Your Hands

Before touching your tattoo, always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water to avoid introducing any bacteria to the area.

3. Gently Clean Your Tattoo

After removing the bandage, gently wash your tattoo with lukewarm water and, fragrance-free antibacterial soap. Use your fingertips to clean the area; do not use a washcloth, sponge, or anything abrasive. Pat the tattoo dry with a clean paper towel.

4. Apply a Thin Layer of Ointment

Once the tattoo has dried, apply a generous layer of a tattoo aftercare ointment to ensure thorough coverage. Suitable options include Aquaphor or products specifically formulated for tattoo care. It’s important to avoid using petroleum jelly or heavy creams as these can suffocate the tattoo from breathing and potentially hindering the healing process.

5. Rest

You should rest for at least 24 - 48 hours post-tattoo, and avoid any strenuous activities to support proper healing.

Ongoing Care

1. Keep It Clean and Moisturised

Continue to clean your tattoo gently with frangrance-free antibacterial soap and lukewarm water twice a day. After cleaning, apply a generous layer of aftercare ointment or a fragrance-free moisturiser.

2. Avoid Submerging in Water

For at least 1 week, avoid submerging your tattoo in water. This means no swimming, hot tubs, or baths. Showers are fine, but avoid direct water pressure on the tattoo.

3. Avoid Sun Exposure

Protect your tattoo from direct sunlight. UV rays can cause the colours to fade and may damage the healing skin. Once healed, always apply a high-SPF sunscreen to your tattoo when exposed to the sun.

4. Wear Loose Clothing

Wear loose, comfortable clothing that won’t rub against your tattoo. Tight clothing can irritate the area and cause unnecessary friction.

5. Avoid Scratching or Picking

As your tattoo heals, it may scab or peel. This is normal. Do not scratch, pick, or peel the scabs, as this can cause scarring and loss of colour. If the area itches, gently pat it or apply a light layer of moisturiser.

Healing Process

1. Initial Healing (Days 1-3)

Your tattoo may feel tender and swollen. Continue to keep it clean and moisturised, following the instructions above.

2. Scabbing and Peeling (Days 4-14)

Your tattoo will begin to scab and peel. This is a natural part of the healing process. Continue to keep the area clean and apply moisturiser as needed.

3. Final Healing (Days 15-30)

Most of the scabbing and peeling should be complete. Your tattoo may still appear slightly dull or dry. Continue to apply moisturiser and avoid sun exposure.

Aftercare Kits

We sell aftercare kits at the studio, which include everything you need for proper tattoo care. Our kits contain high-quality, fragrance-free products specifically designed to aid in the healing process and maintain the vibrancy of your tattoo.

When to Seek Medical Advice

While it’s normal to experience some redness, swelling, and tenderness in the initial days, be aware of the following signs of potential infection:

- Excessive Redness or Swelling

- Pus or Foul Odour

- Severe Pain

- Fever or Chills

If you notice any of these symptoms, please contact a healthcare professional immediately.
